Professor Verity Brown (University of St. Andrews) will give a lecture entitled:
Absent and lost minds: what is missing?
Most of us have experienced episodes of ‘absent mindedness'… probably fewer might have experienced a ‘lost mind'. What do we know about what is missing when the mind is absent or lost? This is the topic of a talk that will consider the limits of attention – in particular, asking why does it sometimes fail us and what can we learn from these failures. I will talk about schizophrenia, a mental illness in which normal ‘filtering' is impaired and people can no longer make sense of the world. In considering both mild and catastrophic failures of attention, we can learn how the mind normally processes information. We will then be in a better position to seek ways to treat illnesses such as schizophrenia. I will discuss the methods of pre-clinical research aimed at finding new treatments for psychiatric illness and describe some recent progress we have made. The talk is intended to be accessible and of interest to a general audience, including undergraduates with either an arts or science background… anyone who can locate their mind in fact!
